Understanding the German Nursing Qualification Recognition Process

June 20, 20266 min read

The professional qualification recognition process (Anerkennung) is a critical step for international nurses planning to work in Germany. This guide walks you through the process step by step.

What is Anerkennung?

Anerkennung is the official process through which German authorities evaluate and recognize foreign professional qualifications. For nursing professionals, this is mandatory before you can practice in Germany.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Document Preparation

Gather all required documents including your nursing degree certificate, transcripts, professional registration, work experience certificates, and a valid passport.

2. Application Submission

Submit your application to the competent authority (zuständige Stelle) in the federal state where you plan to work.

3. Equivalence Assessment

The authority compares your qualification with the German reference qualification (Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger/in or Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann).

4. Decision

You will receive one of three outcomes:

  • Full recognition : Your qualification is deemed equivalent
  • Partial recognition : Differences identified, requiring an adaptation measure
  • Non-recognition : Significant differences that cannot be compensated
  • 5. Adaptation Measures (if required)

If partial recognition is granted, you may need to complete:

  • An adaptation period (Anpassungslehrgang) of up to 3 years
  • A knowledge examination (Kenntnisprüfung)
  • Timeline

The entire process typically takes 3–6 months from application to decision, though adaptation measures may extend this timeline.
